NUTRITION: TIPS FOR COACHES & PARENTS
by Meade Smith, Velocity Sports Performance
Here are some helpful hints for coaches and parents planning and organizing pre-game meals, and making sure athletes are well-nourished before competition.

1)      Organize different parents to be in charge of team coolers for each game or tournament. Make a list of recommended items to include each time so it’s easy on the coach/parent doing the shopping.
2)      Be a role model. As a parent or coach, young athletes will model your behavior be it positive or negative. Encourage athletes to maintain a well-balanced sports eating plan w/o restricting certain foods.
3)      Plan pre-game meals for home and away games and competitions. Schedule pre-game meals at the school or at parent’s or coach’s home so all athletes have a chance to eat a good meal. These meals are also great team bonding activities.
4)      Never focus on an athlete’s body weight or size, especially in front of other athletes. Even in sports like football where obtaining a certain body weight is a demand of the sport, treat athletes with respect and confidence to avoid fostering restrictive dieting behaviors or a negative body image.

Hopefully these tips will help fuel your team to victory! Please do not hesitate to contact Meade Smith, Sports Performance Director, at Velocity Sports Performance with any questions concerning this article.
